MIPS eligible clinicians reporting as individuals will only be scored on performance categories for which data was submitted. All other performance categories will be reweighted to 0% of their final score.
CMS has also extended the application for Extreme and Uncontrollable Circumstances to March 31.
If you already submitted data, you will be scored on the data submitted. You cannot ‘un-submit’ data and you can not file an exemption application to ‘override’ your previous submission.
If you have not submitted data, you need to take the following into consideration:
Will my MIPS Score be 45 or above? If the answer is no, you want to take advantage of the automatic exemption.
If the answer is yet – how much above 45? All bonuses paid are paid out of the penalty monies collected from those who scored less than 45. With the additional exemptions it is likely that the amount of money in that pot will be very small. You will need to calculate the ROI on reporting. When making that calculation you should take the following into account:
- How much above 45 is my score?
- What kind of bonus can I reasonably expect?
- How much does it cost to submit my data?
- How much more work do I have to do to submit data?
What if I submitted only 1 item (Quality, Promoting Interoperability, or Improvement Activities)?
CMS requires data on 2 categories to be submitted to calculate a cost adjustment. So, if you only submitted 1 category and do not submit any other data you will qualify for the automatic exemption.
Should I file for the hardship exemption?
Filing for the hardship exemption requires you to attest that COVID 19 prevented you from collecting the data. With an automatic exemption by doing nothing why sign any forms and make any attestations? And once again is you already submitted data or if you submit data before the deadline you will not be eligible for the automatic exemption or the hardship exemption.
